The FNP clinical requirement in brief
FNP is family and individual primary care across the lifespan. Programs may organize pediatric, adult, older adult, reproductive health, and other objectives differently, so there is no universal population split or preceptor count.

Who precepts, and who can it be
Placement responsibilities vary by school and course, and the program decides whether a proposed clinician and setting are eligible. A possible preceptor's preparation, licensure, scope, patient panel, and practice setting must fit the current objectives. Confirm the exact criteria with the program before relying on any candidate.
Every preceptor and site has to be approved, which generally means a CV and a signed agreement, and a willing clinician is not the same as an approved one. The find a preceptor page walks through the search, and the preceptor requirements page covers eligibility in detail.

How many clinical hours does an FNP program require?
The 2022 NTF national education standards recommend at least 750 direct patient care hours per NP population track. ANCC and AANPCB certification sources separately use a minimum of 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours. Confirm your program's exact current total and distribution.
Why does FNP need so many preceptors?
FNP primary care spans the lifespan, but programs organize objectives and settings differently. The number of preceptors depends on the course plan, patient populations, clinician scopes, and program approval. Confirm the current requirements before planning the search.
Which FNP rotations are hardest to find?
Pediatrics and women's health are the two scarcest. Most primary-care clinicians who host FNP students see a predominantly adult panel, so preceptors who work meaningfully with children or with women's reproductive care are a smaller pool. Adult and gerontology are usually more available and can often be covered by one primary-care preceptor.
Who can serve as an FNP preceptor?
Generally a board-certified nurse practitioner in a focus appropriate to the population, or a licensed physician (MD or DO), with the experience your program requires. A certified nurse midwife is often accepted for women's-health hours. The preceptor's scope must fit the population, and the preceptor and site must be approved by your program. What certification do FNP graduates earn?
FNP graduates may pursue FNP-C certification through AANPCB or FNP-BC certification through ANCC. Each certification source uses at least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours for eligibility, separate from the 750-hour NTF education recommendation and from a program's current total. Confirm current certification and licensure rules with the relevant certifier and board of nursing.
Can any FNP hours be done by telehealth?
It depends on your program and your state's rules, not on us. Precepted telehealth may count in part, but whether remote hours count, and in what proportion, is the university's and the state's decision. Simulation hours do not count toward direct patient care. We confirm what is allowed against your program before treating any remote hours as part of a plan.
What does your placement service cost, and when do I pay?
Independent NP preceptor placement generally runs roughly 1,000 to 2,500 dollars per rotation across the market, and because FNP needs several rotations we plan and price the full lifespan up front. You pay only once each preceptor and approved site are confirmed. The fee is for our sourcing and approval work, never a payment to the preceptor. See our cost page.
